New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) are required for certification to teach in New York. There are a number of different examinations that comprise the NYSTCE, including an Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS), individual Tests for Teacher Certification - Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAST), Elementary Written Assessment of Teaching Skills (ATS-W), Content Specialty Tests (CSTs), Bilingual Education Assessments (BEAs), Communication and Quantitative Skills Test (CQST), and Video Assessment of Teaching Skills (ATS-P). (The ATS-P has a different set of registration and submission requirements.) All NYSTCE tests are available in paper-based format and some tests are also offered in computer-based format.
The LAST, ATS-W, Multi-Subject CST, and ATAS can all be taken via computer at specific locations in the state of New York. If you are considering being tested on a computer, review the web page on Choosing Computer-Based Testing, located on the NYSTCE website, which discusses all the points of comparison between the two test formats.
One of the biggest differences is between the paper-based testing and computer-based testing is that computer-based testing has a fluid enrollment schedule, whereas its paper-based counterpart is only administered on specific dates. Due to this fact, there is not a computer-based exam schedule. The paper-based examination schedule follows.
